Notes
Census
At the time of the 1921 census, he was employed by Eastmans Ltd, meat importers, High Street East, Wallsend.Property
People who worked with his grandson remembered the butcher's shop from when they sat in their council offices over the road in Wallsend Town Hall. Edith Hodgson remembered his shop too, and knew him as "Harry". I think it's very likely that a photograph of this shop exists somewhere (possibly in North Shields library's local history photo collection), as it was in a prominent location on High Street East, directly opposite the town hall. One photo available from the Francis Frith Collection is from the right era but the butcher's shop is just out of shot.Miscellaneous
According to James Robinson (editor, ''Classic Motorcycle'' magazine), the bike was probably a BSA G14, a 1000cc V-twin [alternatively possibly a Panther], while the sidecar was probably built by Watsonian, rather than being one of BSA's own.Military
Wartime stories told about Henry Harland Stainthorp include:1 Throwing hand grenades off Tynemouth Priory.
2 Bringing a bren gun into the house.
3 Seeing a ghost whilst out on patrol.
4 Having one side of his handlebar moustache shaved off whilst asleep, by his mates.
5 Discarding a Smith and Wesson revolver off Tynemouth pier in the 1940s after an amnesty had expired.
Miscellaneous
While out at night on a home guard patrol, he had walked into a lamp post in the darkness. Of course they weren't lit up because of the wartime blackout regulations. The stars and flashes in the poem refer to his stunned state.Miscellaneous
His son William (Bill) Stainthorp used to talk about this car, saying that Alvis built armoured cars. He talked a lot about the car he used to drive up and out of the drive in Links Road, during the war, always in the same breath as talking about the Alvis so assumed they were one and the same.Miscellaneous
Apparently he was suffering from persecutory delusions and believed the Inland Revenue were pursuing him (described at his inquest as "imaginary financial worries"), leading to his suicide.Endnotes
