8. Personal Knowledge David JONES Born/age 21 May 1839 on/during 13 October 1884 Died of Cirrhosis of the Liver Note by Gail Denise BEMBRIDGE (JONES) I have not found David on the 1861 or 1871 census, he could be working away somewhere with Joseph Palmer (husband of his sister Ann). In 1874 he must have been over at St. Dogwells because that is when his first daughter was born. I have not yet found a marriage there though. Frances was 19 in 1874, David was 35. In October 1884 when he died, his eldest daughter Elizabeth Anne (aged 8) registered his death. he is buried at Rhymney Churchyard along with his two youngest daughters, there does not appear to be a headstone, so obviously his father (Jones the Gof) did not spend out on a headstone for him, and his own family would have been too poor to buy one. Where was his wife Frances, why didn't she register his death? At the beginning of December 1884 David Jones Senior, re-wrote his Will, and dead David is just mentioned as son David and not "beloved" son/daughter as the other children are called. One gets the feeling that there had been some family trouble. In the Will the children of dead David are left the 5 cottages at High Street, Troedrhiwfuwch, once they got to be 21 years of age. Up until then, (Lizzie Ann would have been 21 in 1895) they would have equal payments of the rents at intervals, the rents being supervised by William Rowlands and then Mr Prynne the rent collector, and yet these 2 were allowed by the Will to deduct their expenses from the rents. According to family tradition, there was hardly ever any rent money to receive. It had always been spent of repairs etc. At the end of December 1884, Frances married Thomas Holmes at the Cardiff Register Office. Did David die of drowning his sorrows in drink because his wife had left him for another man, or did Frances leave him for another man because of his drinking? She married Thomas Holmes six weeks after David’s death. Provided by the Personal knowledge of Gail Denise BEMBRIDGE (JONES)
