He was chief mate under his father, Captain Murray, on the barque Brillia nt which carried passengers between Scotland and Australia. When his fath er died at sea, William took over as Captain and brought the ship home. W illiam married his cousin but had no children. Through a fright he got b y falling down a manhole in the steamer he was master of, he was oblige d to leave the sea.
