I don't have either the 1891 or 1901 census. However, in 1891 he'd have b een ten and I expect in Kilsyth. In September 1902 (giving his address a s Blantyre, Lanarkshire) he seems to have joined the 4th Batt Argyll & Su therland Highlanders and in July 1903 3rd Batt Highland Light Infantry (g iving his address as Kilsyth) - both as a reservist. In 1907 he married m y Granny in Gateshead (High Spen), in 1911 they're still there on the cen sus and in 1912, my Dad was born there. Judging by the age of my Dad, I t hink the photo would have been taken in the High Spen area and, althoug h I know they had a son in 1914 (same area) who died at around six months , there's a big gap between him and the first sister (born in Fife) so i t looks as if Joseph might have been posted away .
I've had a look through the free site on Tynecastle Scottish (Northumberl and Fusiliers) on the offchance that he might have joined the same regime nt as his brother in law (Joseph Ripley) but can't find him. However, I s ee there's a J Coyle with the number 8755 in the Army Cyclist Corps For s ome reason, I'm sure I remember my Mum saying one of the family served i n this capacity (I thought this was strange and looked it up!) and I als o see that the Northumberland Fusiliers had a section of cyclists.
