Mary Watkins

(14 Feb 1817 - 1 Jan 1908)

According to Clifton W. Culp, her grandson, Mary and her first husband immigrated to the United States with their three children (Rachel Delves, age 4, Ruth Delves, age 2, and Sarah Delves, age 1) in 1848. Her husband became sick four weeks after departing England. He became progressively worse for the remainder of the three weeks it took to reach Staten Island on August the 28th. He died on the 30th. Mary stayed in New York three weeks and then made her way mostly by boat to Union County, Illinois, and settled near Jonesboro. She purchased forty acres of land a few miles South of Jonesboro, built a log cabin on it, and lived there until marrying William. She established membership at the Regular Baptist Church in Rich Creek. Mary was a contributing writer to the Regular Baptist Magazine (Vol. XIII, #3, Feb. 1, 1888 and Vol. XIV, #5, March 1, 1889). She and William preferred to be called "Primitive" Baptists.
