Individual Details

Dr. Thomas Jefferson Rich

(20 Mar 1845 - 17 Mar 1926)

Thomas was of English descent, his ancestors having sailed from Plymouth, England, in the latter part of the sixteenth century. His great-great-grandfather, Captain Jacob Rich, Sr., was killed during the Revolutionary War at the battle of Camden, South Carolina. At the age of eighteen, Thomas enlisted in the Union Army in the 13th Illinois Calvary, Company I. The date of his enlistment was December 21, 1863, and he was mustered out of service on August 31, 1865. Upon his return from the Civil War, he attended school and served as a medical apprentice to a Dr. F.M. Agnew of Makanda. In March, 1870 he entered Miami Medical College in Cincinnati from which he graduated with honors in February, 1872. Paul Culp, his grandson, remembers hearing stories of him living in the country east of Anna and making house calls by horse and buggy. He later moved to Anna and had an office above the drug store (photographed in 2000). Paul enjoyed visiting him there and always remembered the strong scent of medicines. Thomas was a Trustee of his denomination and the Superintendent of the Sunday School. He retired in 1923. Funeral services were conducted at the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Anna. The hymn selections of Beautiful Isle of Somewhere, Nearer My God To Thee, and Rock of Ages were led by the Church choir. The chosen scripture text was 2nd Timothy, 4:7. He was buried in the Anna Cemetery with his third wife, Maggie, by the Norris Funeral Home (tombstone photograph available).
