Heinrich Funck

IMMIGRATION: Heinrich and Anna arrived in Philadelphia from Germany on 10 August 1717 and lived in Germantown initially. In 1719 they settled near Indian Creek, Franconia Twp., Montgomery Co., PA (a couple of miles north from the present City of Harleysville). Said to have arrived with best friend Dielman Kolb, who landed on August 10, 1717.

LAND: A December 20, 1718, land warrant to Heinrich Funck of Germantown for 101-3/4 acres on a branch of Perkeawming Creek. Later bought adjoining tracts to bring total to 201 acres. Also 166 acres "of ye Manor Lands on ye upper part of a branch of Perkyoming", probably a part of Perkasie Manor, Hilltown Twp., Bucks Co., PA willed to son Henry.

PROBATE: Will filed in Philadelphia in WIll No. 274, S427 dated June 13, 1759. Translated by A. J. Fretz pp. 13-20 and Frances Funck pp. 41-47.

OCCUPATION: First Mennonite Bishop in America; religious author and translator, operated grist mill on Indian Creek, Franconia Twp., PA. Co-translated the Dutch book "Martyrs Mirror", or "Der Blutige Schauplatz" from Dutch to German with Dielman Kolb. This was a folio of 1514 pages printed at Ephrata in 1748. It was one of the largest works published in this country during the Colonial period. Author of two religious works, one a small book in German entitled, Spiegel der Taufe" (Mirror of Baptism), and the other larger work entitled, "Eine Retitution, oder eine Erklaerung einiger Hauptpunkte des Gesetzes", which was published after his death in 1863 and was reprinted at Biel, Switzerland, in 1844, and Lancaster, PA in 1862.

BURIAL: Delp's Cemetery, Franconia Twp., Montgomery Co., PA (tombstone photograph available). This was the original Funk burying ground. Stone marker erected for Bishop Funk. Near Bucks Co., line near Telford, PA.
