John Clinger
Grist Mill Operator and Farmer
1770-1851
John Clinger was 14 years old when his father and mother died. The appraisers advised against dividing his father's estate consisting of 80 acres, grist mill, saw mill, farm, livestock and other property among the 11 children. So it was sold for 1,200 pounds, with each child receiving equal shares of 100 pounds, except for Philip, the eldest, who received 200 pounds. (Philip moved to western Ohio in the early 1800s, as did most of his 12 sons. There is much evidence of this branch of the family in Preble and Darke counties in Ohio, and also in Indiana, around Fort Wayne and in Allen County, where deed books show some of these pioneers obtained land from the Indians around 1820.) After his father's and mother's death, John Clinger lived with a court-appointed guardian, as did six other younger children. In 1791 he married Catherine (Katherine) Sloyer, second daughter of Henry (Heinrich) and Magdelina Sloyer (formerly Schlin). He followed in his father's footsteps as a miller and farmer. His first mill (1795) was on Pine Creek near Yellow Springs Road in Pikeland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Known as "Moses Mill" in more recent years, it was owned in 1969 by Robert Clement. John Clinger later moved to Little Britain Township, (Page 3) Lancaster County, and then in 1825 to Upper Oxford Township, Chester County, and operated mills in both locations. The mill and mill dam at Homeville in Upper Oxford continued in operation and supplied electric power to the town of Homeville until 1935. John and Catherine Clinger both lived into their 80s, and are buried at Homeville. They had eight children: Jacob, Henry, Samuel, Dr. Peter, Edgar, who died while still in his 30s, Ann, Margaret and Hannah. [2]
