Wawrzyniec Gniewek

Pioneers: Lawrence (Wawrzyniec) and Victoria Gniewek

Lawrence Gniewek was born August 10, 1883, in Rzeszow, Poland. He came to Sydney in 1906. Victoria Adamczyk was born in May, 1886 and arrived in Sydney about 1909. They had been friends in Poland before crossing the occean to Canada. Lawrence and Victoria wre married March 30, 1910, in Holy Redeemer Church by Rev. R. MacInnis. Their marriage was blessed with seven children, namely: Helen (d.), Mary (d.), Julia (Ardelli), Tony (d.), Elizabeth (Sheppard), Dominic and Teresa (Siller). all of them except Victoria, Mrs. Gniewek, are shown in the wedding photo of Julia and Marian Ardelli. Lawrence was a member of St. Michael's Benefit Society from the start. In 1959 when the Society celebrated its 50th anniversary, he was the only surviving Charter Member. He worked in the Open Hearth Dept. as Pit Foreman until he retired in 1946 at the age of 63. Victoria was an early president of the Society of Matki Boskiej Saletynskie. When she distributed the La Salette Magazine, her older daughters were willing helpers. Victoria died young, on Dec 21, 1930, at age 44. Lawrence died on March 9, 1963, at age 79.
