Militaryduring the Civil War. According to Walter L. Mower's genealogy, "Thomas was a man of remarkably fearless nature. At the age of 20 entered the army in Co. G, 1st Me. Cav., serving through the entire war; mustered out 20 June 1865. Besides hospital duty from Oct. '62 to May '63, was in his regiment in 30 pitched battles and minor engagements; had a horse shot from under thim while on picket near Greeley Farm, Va., was in a squad of the Reg. that was surrounded by the Rebels, but sabered his way out and escaped; and at another time his hardy little steed saved his life by a long race for safety. By rare fortune of war was not wounded while in the service."
