The subject of this sketch is one of Maine's smartest and oldest ladies, Mrs. Lydia T. Mower of Greene, who in her 100th year is still knitting and making quilts. Aunt "Liddy" as everyone calls her, was born in Topsham, Maine, Nov. 27, 1805, the daughter of Lemuel Thompson who came from Kennebunk to Topsham as one of the earlier settlers and of his large family of eight sons and two daughter, Mrs. Mower alone remains. She came to Greene about 1840 as the second wife of the late Calvin Mower of Greene who died July 22d, 1873, at the age of 74 years. His father, John Mower, was one of the pioneers of Greene. By this marriage two daughters were born, Mrs. W. H. Harris of Minneapolis, and Mrs. A. B. Donnell of Lewiston. Upon the death of Calvin Mower, she removed to Lewiston, living with her daughter Susan (Mrs. W. H. Harris). After they moved to Minneapolis, Mrs. Mower preferred to retain the rent, letting one room and looking after her other business dow town herself. Her many deeds of charity and good works for the poor and needy are well known hereabouts. She is a member of the Main street Free Baptist church and has always been a loyal devotee of her church. As infirmities of age crept on she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. A. B. Donnell, late proprietor of "Highmoor farm," Monmouth; and when this large property was recently sold, Mrs. Donnell found a comfortable home with Mrs. B. C. Davis of Greene, rather than subject her mother to the journey to Lewiston. Mrs. Mower completes a quilt nearly every month, her work in this direction being remarkable. She says, "God never made my hands to be idle and I must keep them busy." She retains almost perfect health and her faculties are wonderful for a person of her age. She may yet live to see her 100th birthday.Endnotes
