AUGUSTA - Velma E. (Knowles) Withee, 93, of Augusta, died Monday, April 22, 1996, at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Augusta on April 29, 1902, the daughter of William and Ellura (Gordon) Knowles. She attended Augusta schools and graduated from Cony High School in 1921. For a short time, she taught school in Augusta. She married Irl Everett Withee on Aug. 15, 1923, at the summer home of Rev. A. Francis Walch in Saco. Mrs. Withee was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene of Augusta, the North Augusta Grange, Pomona Grange, State Grange, and National Grange, and was an original member of the former Augusta Players. She is survived by son-in-law, Edward Gallant of Belgrade; a granddaughter, Pam Beaulieu of Augusta; and several cousins. She was predeceased by her husband on Nov. 21, 1983, and a daughter, Joan Withee Gallant on June 29, 1983. Visiting hours will be held Thursday 6-8 p.m. at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in the Coombs Mills Cemetery, Augusta.Endnotes
