"Martin Albert Torinus, another representative of the Torinus family, was born in Stillwater, February 26, 1870, son of Louis Ernest and Helen (Mower) Torinus. He received his preliminary education in the public schools of his native place, which he attended for nine years, afterward taking a course in the Shattuck Military Academy at Faribault, Minn., from 1885 to 1888. After leaving school he worked on the river drives for the purpose of learning the logging business from the beginning. He also engaged in various other lines of lumbering until elected general manager of the St. Croix Lumber Company. Later he was made president, which position he still holds. For seven years he served as private in Company K, of the state militia. He is a Republican in politics and affiliates with the Masons and the Elks. Mr. Torinus married September 28, 1892, to Olivia Jane Hospes, by whom he has two sons, Adolphus Hospes and Martin Albert, Jr. The publication of a portrait of Mr. Torinus in this work causes three generations to be represented by engravings, his father, his grandfather and himself. Although the corporation known as the St. Croix Lumber Company, which was organized early in 1873 for a period of thirty years, expired by limitation in 1903, yet the descendants of L. E. Torinus - who was the life and moving spirit of the original firm - have seen fit to retain the old and honored name, simply transferring their vast operations to a newer and more productive field - nearer to the sources of supply. The St. Croix Lumber Company disposed of its saw mills at South Stillwater in 1900 to the Eclipse Saw Mill Company, and Tozer & Nolan, and in the same year bought out the Knox Lumber Company, at Winton, Minn., together with a large amount of standing pine of Day Brothers, Minneapolis, and several others. This plant is at the terminus of the Duluth & Iron Range railroad, which they have enlarged and remodeled, so that at the present time the sawmill capacity is 320,000 feet during the run of twenty hours, while the planing mill capacity is fifteen cars per day. The plant consists of sawmill, planing mill, boarding house, general store, and fifty-five dwelling houses. The yearly cut of the mills is 55,000,000 feet of lumber and 12,000,000 lath of Norway and white pine. The company has enough standing pine to supply its mill for ten years. The yards and mills cover a hundred acres of ground. Number of men employed in the winter, 10,000; in the summer, 300. The company operated retail yards until 1902, when it disposed of forty yards, and is now exclusively engaged in the wholesale trade. The officers are: President, M. A. Torinus; vice president, L. E. Torinus; second vice president, B. E. Torinus; secretary and treasurer, H. L. Hagerman."Census
