Notes
Death
According to a mortuary notice in the Kalamazoo Gazette, Adeline's death was sudden and unexpected. She had been visiting at one of her neighbors the evening prior to her death, reportedly appearing in good health and spirits, exhibiting an animation and exuberance of feeling. The following morning, however, she did not appear at breakfast time. Her son, 7 year old Francis, was sent to wake her up. He returned crying and saying that his mother was dead. The other members of his family laughed and tried to pacify him saying that she was probably just sleeping very soundly. He persisted stating that his mother always spoke to him, and this morning she didn't and that her eyes were open. This startled the family and they rushed to Adeline's bedroom to discover that she had indeed died. It appeared from her position, that she had died without a struggle. Physicians put forth their thoughts on the cause of her death, based on Adeline having frequently complained of "an affection in that region."Endnotes
