Obituary
HAMPDEN and DUNCANSVILLE, Pa. - Phyllis Carmalt Rowell, 86, who lived 75 years in Hampden/Bangor and 11 years in Duncansville, Pa., passed from time into eternity with the Lord Jesus April 22, 2008, after having enjoyed a miraculous reprieve for months from some of her many medical conditions. She was the fourth child of Clarence and M. Bernice (Thompson) Carmalt. She was a member of Brewer High School, Class of 1940 and attended Beal Business College and University of Maine at Orono. For 35 years she jointly owned and operated Green Valley Lumber Co., with her husband of 59 years, Clifford H. Rowell, who predeceased her in 1998. She was also a substitute teacher, cake decorating instructor, convalescent home operator, church soloist, Christian poet and a doer of her faith. Even during the last few months, when her body became incapacitated, she asked the Lord each morning how she could serve him that day, and many were impacted by her faith. In '97 they moved to Pennsyvania, to be near their son, Steven and wife, Dr. Bonny Rowell; daughter, Susan and husband, the Rev. Gordon Hemphill, moved in to help care for her in '99. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Karen Hemphill Raines of Massachusetts, Angela Rowell Mock of Pennsylvania, and Christopher Rowell of California; four stepgrandchildren, Hardy of California, Anders of California, Chad of New York, and Jamie Hemphill of New Hampshire; one niece, Diane Worthen Crocker of Bangor; and cousins. She was predeceased by her siblings, Calvin and William Carmalt and Geneva Carmalt Worthen. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at Brookings-Smith, with the Rev. Gordon Hemphill officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the service at Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor. In lieu of any flowers, it was her wish that you please see Genesis 12:3 and send contributions to "Exodus II," John Hagee Ministries, P.O. Box 1400, San Antonio, TX 78205-1400.Endnotes
