According to the Mower genealogy, Isreal Herrick followed on homestead at West Leeds; and when a young man, he became interested in silk manufacture and development. He obtained a small quantity of mulberry seed and planted it. When the plants were large enough to transplant, he set out a mulberry orchard. He obtained 400 silkworms from Massy Sylvester of Greene and commenced the manufacture to silk on a small scale. Business increased and he built a cocoonery 50 feel long and 19 feet wide. This with his farming gave him good returns. Conducted the silk business till 1850 when he gave it up entirely.Census
