Houlton residents mourned the loss Tuesday of Glen B. Tidd Sr., a former volunteer firefighter, Little League coach and town employee for 35 years. Tidd, 66, died Saturday at a Houlton hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer. "He was a very dedicated employee," Kevin Tingley, assistant director of the Houlton Department of Public Works, said Tuesday. "When you get someone who stays on a job for that long ... what can you say? That's dedication." Tidd was employed as an equipment operator at the Houlton Municipal Garage until his retirement in 2002. He also served as shop foreman for a number of years, and spent many winters behind the wheel of the town's plow trucks, scraping and sanding icy roads after snowstorms. "Even while he was going through chemotherapy treatments, even after he lost part of his lung to cancer, he kept working." Tingley said. "He was quite a worker," Mike Prosser, equipment operator at the municipal garage, said Tuesday. "He was one hurting unit ... but he kept working." Firefighters who served with Tidd echoed similar sentiments Tuesday, "I really know Glen more as an avid outdoorsman than I did as a fireman," Glenn Miller, a Houlton firefighter said Tuesday. "If he was in the woods down in Haynesville hunting, I'd usually bump into him. We hunted in the same area for years." "He was my Little League coach," said Brian Beals, a fellow firefighter and driver. "I must have been 9 years old back then. I liked him a lot." Tidd was past president of the Houlton Rifle and Pistol Club and also served as a Cub Scout leader. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Bowers Funeral Home in Houlton, with the Rev. Bruce Williams officiating.Endnotes
