Eben Mower Tibbetts, born in Dexter May 21, 1834, was the only son of James Tibbetts and his second wife, Lucretia (Mower) Tibbetts. Mr. Tibbetts received his education in the common schools and Hartland Academy. He was expressman for ten years, mail agent from Bangor to Boston for twelve years. He became a partner in the furniture business in Dexter with John Pennington, under the name of Pennington and Tibbetts, and later he was the sole owner. Undertaking had been added to the business. Mr. Tibbetts was selectman of Dexter for nine years and judge of probate three years. He was a trustee of the Dexter Savings Bank and its president. He was a Republican and a Methodist, and was highly respected by all who knew him. He married Elizabeth A. Keene, daughter of Samuel and Maria (Jennings) Keene, June 30, 1858. They had three children, James F., Helen L., and Harry E. Tibbetts. Mr. Tibbetts died July 28, 1902. Mrs. Tibbetts deserves more than passing mention. She was interested in anything that tended to the betterment of the community in which she lived. She was one of the founders of the Woman's Literacy Club; was an active worker in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union; and a zealous member of the Methodist church.Endnotes
