Notes
Bio Note
Matthias Vickery and his brother David Vickery went to Falmouth, Me., with their mother, Hannah Vickery, about 1744-45. Nothing is known of his younger days, but he first appears in the Cape Elizabeth company under Loring Cushman that fought in the French and Indian War which was ended in 1760. His brother David, and David's wife's father, Archelaus Stone were also in the same company, and in 1766 received grants of land beyond the Penobscot which was acquired under the Treaty of Peace with France in 1763, for their service in this war. Probably Matthias took up his land in 1769, as the rest of his children after the first one were all born at Bluehill Bay. Matthias Vickery was a mariner like his father; and a Return of all males from 16 years old and upwards of Blue Hill, or "No. 5", Nov. 13, 1777, shows the name of Mathias Vickery. He being one of the first settlers of the town. Matthias Vickery returned from Blue Hill with his family about 1782-84. "Matthias Vickery, who settled in the eastern part of the town (of Danville) not far from the Androscoggin River, between 1782 and 1784, had by his two wives, Ruth Horton and Elizabeth Wagg, a family of 19 children, of whom four died in childhood." Matthias Vickery still owned property there (in Blue Hill) in 1790, as a tax list of that date shows him owning 10 acres of pasture, and 90 acres of wild land there. Mathias Vickery died in Pejepscot, Me., in 1812. The name of Pejepscot was changed to Danville in 1819. It is now Auburn, Me.Endnotes
