An article in the Reno Gazette-Journal reported that the Kings arrived in Reno on the evening of 23 December 1908, staying at the McCormack Hotel. The following day they are to visit San Francisco for a few days and then sail to Honolulu, Hawaii, for their honeymoon.Obituary
Ralph King, retired rancher, former railroader and miner and member of a prominent pioneer family of California died today in a local hospital at the age of 88. Mr. King was the grandson of the late James King of William early day crusading California publisher and founder of the San Francisco Call Bulletin. His father was Joseph L. King, one of the founders and early day member of the San Francisco stock exchange. Born in San Francisco Dec. 20, 1873, Ralph King attended school in the bay city, and turned to railroading at an early age. He operated the railroad's commissary interests in the Tucson, Ariz. area for a number of years, being with the company when the lines were extended into Mexico. Later he followed mining, prospecting and railroading in California and Nevada and from Alaska to Mexico. In Tuscarora, Nov. he met Miss Mabel Plumb, a 1904 graduate of the University of Nevada who was teaching school, and they were married in 1909 in Carlin. Following their marriage the couple took up a ranch in the Milford, Calif. area which they conducted until five years ago when they retired and moved to Reno. The ranch was primarily devoted to sheepraising. Mr. King was a member of the Janesville Masonic Lodge, the California Pioneers and was a charter member of the Susanville Rotary Club. Surviving are his widow, a daughter, Mrs. Marvin Humphrey of Reno; a son, Ralph P. King of Woodside, Calif.; six grandchildren, Joseph King Humphrey, Mrs. Barbara Lamson, Sarah and Ellen Humphrey all of Reno; and James P. and Carolyn King of Woodside, Calif.; two brothers, Joseph L. King Jr. and Percy L. King and a sister Mrs. Lucie King Harris all of San Francisco. Masonic funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Ross-Burke Co. home chapel with the Rev. John T. Ledger clergyman. Cremation will follow at Mountain View Crematory and the ashes will be placed in Cypress Lawn Cemetery, Colma, Calid.Endnotes
