| Occupation | newspaperman, starting his career in 1886 on the Bangor Commercial. He then spent two years working on the Somerset Register in Skowhegan, Maine, before returning to Bangor as manager of the Commercial Union Telegraph branch. In this capacity, he also worked briefly as manager of its offices in Lawrence, Massachusetts; Manchester, New Hampshire; and Lewiston, Maine, as well. He later joined the staff of the Bangor Whig & Courier as a reporter, writing a daily column filed with bits of humor, philosophy and observation which he signed "Jeff Strout." Later, he served as telegraph editor. He was then promoted to city editor, the position he held when the paper was purchased and merged with the Bangor Daily News. | | |||
