A despatch received Saturday forenoon from Boston announced the death in that city, at seven o'clock Saturday morning, of Mr. George R. Lancaster, of this city, who, with his wife, had been passing about two weeks in that city. They were intending to return home on Friday, but on that day he was stricken with apoplexy and died as above stated. Mr. Lancaster had been in feeble health for some time, but his death, coming as it did, was sudden and unexpected, and has thrown gloom over a large circle of friends. Mr. Fred G. Lancaster, the eldest son, who resides in Philadelphia, was apprised of his father's condition Friday noon and reached Boston that evening, and the younger son, Asa N., left here on Friday night's Pullman, reaching Boston shortly before his father died. The remains, accompanied by the bereaved widow and sons, arrived here yesterday morning, and the funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon at half-past three o'clock. Mr. Lancaster was born in Belfast and would have reached his sixty-seventh birthday this week. His earlier life was passed in Belfast, where, in company with his brother, H. N. Lancaster, he was engaged in the livery stable and stage business. In 1857 he went to California where he located in Nevada City and carried on a hotel, and was also interested in mining business, amassing a handsome property during his seven years' residence, returning here in 1864. For some years after his return he carried on the wholesale grocery business here with Mr. Andrew Babb, under the style of Babb & Lancaster, but later retired from business. He was at one time engaged in the livery business in Boston. Mr. Lancaster was of a genial disposition and very popular in social circles. He was a prominent member of the Tarratine Club. Politically he was an ardent Republican, and has served in the City Government from Ward Five. He was twice married, his first wife, by whom he had the two sons mentioned above, being the daughter of the late Andrew Hasey. His second wife, whom he married three years ago, was the widow of the late William Torrey, of San Francisco, Cal., who, with his sons, will receive the deepest sympathies of a large circle of friends in bereavement.Endnotes
