Mr. William Gibbs, father of Mrs. Judge Burgess, died quite suddenly at his home in Alton, Thursday. Mr. Gibbs sustained a paralytic shock last spring, and did not expect to remain long among us, but his death was undoubtedly hastened by an accident which occurred some three weeks ago at the Bangor & Piscataquis station at Alton. Mr. Gibbs was a man of integrity and ability; was interested and active in the prosperity of his town and State; was a staunch Republican and strong advocate of prohibition. In his death his town loses a man who was alive to her interests, his neighbors a genial citizen, and his family a kind and indulgent father. He was about seventy-five years of age.Membership
The following resolutions were passed by Alton Lodge of I. O. of G. T. on the death of William H. Gibbs, who was an active member for more than twenty years: Whereas, through the intervention of Divine Providence, our circle has been broken and a brother has been taken from us; and that by his death the Lodge has lost a most worthy member and the temperance cause a zealous worker, and each member a trusted friend and neighbor; therefore, Resolved, That as a fitting expression of our feelings we order our badges and charter to be draped in black during the ensuing quarter; Resolved, further, That the relatives of the deceased have our full sympathy; Resolved, That these resolutions be recorded in the records of our Lodge, and that they be forwarded to the BANGOR WEEKLY COURIER, and that a copy be sent to each of the near relatives. A. H. TWITCHELL, Committee.Endnotes
