The father of Emily's first child, Elbert is unknown. In 1870 Emily and Elbert were living with her mother in Helton Township in Ashe Co., North Carolina. Also living in that township was widower Ambrose Jones with his six children, Ellen, John, Melinda, Andrew, David, and William. Although he was 22 years her senior, Emily wed Ambrose four years later and they had three additional children: Robert, Mary, and Maggie.

Emily and Ambrose were not living together in the 1900 census. He was living with his son Cicero from his previous marriage.
