Jimmy Lee Conner

Jimmy Lee Conner, 80, of Salem, Va., passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2014.
He was born to the late Carlyle and Louise Conner on August 16, 1934, in Roanoke, Va. After school Jim entered the United States Navy and retired in 1974 after serving more than 23 years with the rank of Lt. Commander. After retiring he returned to Salem and began his second career in the private sector including Cooper Industries and Belvac Inc.
Jim was an active member of the Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder, was a member of the Salem Kiwanis Club, and always looked to serve wherever he was needed. He also enjoyed traveling and particularly golf.
Jim is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Louise C. Wampler, of Daleville.
To cherish his memory, Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Ann Conner; and his two grandsons, Aaron Cochran and his wife, Gillian, of Richmond, and Kellan Cochran and his fianc‚ e, Karen, of Roanoke, whom he adored. Also surviving is brother and sister in-law, Fred and Arelene Conner of Brentwood, Calif.; two sisters, Anne Faries and her husband, Sonny, of Roanoke, and Rebecca Haney and her husband, Don, of San Antonio, Fla.; an aunt, Betty Scott of Roanoke; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, December 21, 2014, at Lotz Chapel in Salem from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial services will be held on Monday, December 22, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, followed by memorial service at Salem Presbyterian Church at 2:15 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Cancer Research Institute, One Exchange Plaza, 55 Broadway, Suite 1802, New York, NY 10006.
