Charlotte Hale Vaughan

Charlotte Vaughan Philen, 68, of Galax, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, at the home in Baywood.
She was born Jan. 25, 1939, in Galax, Virginia, to Thomas Jefferson and Virginia June Hale Vaughan.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Thomas June Vaughan.
She is survived by her husband, O. Donald Philen, Jr., of Galax; her mother, Virginia June Vaughan of Fries; two stepdaughters, Charlotte Lee Philen of Virginia and Donna Lynne Council of North Carolina; a stepson, Bradford Chapman Philen of New York; a step-grandson, Seth Allen Council; a niece, Latich Vaughan Mullins; a nephew, Timothy James Vaughan; an aunt and uncle, Janie Clyde Hale Gentry and Penick Gentry; and several cousins.
After graduating from Fries High School, she received her BA degree from Mary Washington University and her masters degree from the University of Virginia. She was later employed in the field of education as a teacher and guidance counselor.
She was an active member of several organizations and a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Spring Valley; and an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gloria Lancaster Rhudy and the Rev. Olin Shupe officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ebenezer United Methodist Church building fund.
Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
