Obituary of Charles Skinker Valentine

Charles Skinker Valentine, a retired senior partner in the law firm of Mays & Valentine, died yesterday at St. Mary's Hospital. He was 85. Mr. Valentine practiced law for more than 60 years and kept an office at the firm until his death. In 1926, he co-founded the firm of Denny and Valentine. In 1968, it merged with Tucker, Mays, Moore and Reed and is now known as Mays & Valentine, with offices in the Sovran Center.

Mr. Valentine attended the Richmond Academy and Woodberry Forest School, where he graduated in 1919. He graduated from the University of Virginia Law School in 1924. He was a member of the Virginia Bar, the American, Virginia and Richmond Bar associations and the Fourth Circuit Federal Judicial Conference.

Mr. Valentine was an organizer, director and later president of the Richmond Federal Savings and Loan Association (now Security Federal) and a member of the board of Hollywood Cemetery for 50 years. He was a former president of the Commonwealth Club and former board member of the Country Club of Virginia. He belonged to All Saints Episcopal Church and was a former trustee there. He was also a member of Dove Lodge No. 51, A.F.& A.M.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Leonard Valentine; a son, Charles S. Valentine Jr. of Richmond; and a daughter, Mary Lyle Valentine Preston of Charlottesville. The graveside service will be 11 a.m. tomorrow at Hollywood Cemetery.
