Thomas took the oath of fidelity 28 Nov 1677 and removed his family from Reading to Haverhill after the death of his wife Hannah. A Reading history makes the date "about 1677." A list of houses built before 1635 includes one by Thomas Hartshorne. He lived near the meetinghouse in Haverhill, and was there also in 1683. A deed is recorded in which Thomas purchases a house and seven acres of land from John Johnson on 24 Sep 1678. The property, previously owned by Robert Swan, was sold on 9 Feb 1686 to Samuel Emerson.

Thomas "was a miller in town, 1694," in the town of Billerica. He would pursue this trade later after moving to Connecticut. Thomas served in King Philip's War. On the Haverhill payroll is Thomas Hartshorn; 20 shillings.

Later, he appears on the Charlestown Church Records. 20 Oct 1689, he was admitted to the First Church in Boston and was dismissed from there to the Church in Windham, Conn., 13 Nov 1709.

Court evidence given in 1722 regarding a mill owner shows that he was employed in mills in Charlestown in 1700. Thomas Hartshorn and wife Sarah of Windham, Conn., conveyed to their brothers Asa Swan and Richard Swan of Haverhill, Mass., all their rights in lands, etc., "...which belonged to their father, Robert Swan, deceased."

Thomas deeded to his son Ebenezer, land and a mill privilege in Dunstable. N.H. In 1728, Thomas was "aged," in need of care, and no longer able to run the mills and asked the Windham selectmen to manage his affairs.

After they received an answer from Ebenezer that he could not come to care for his father "with no manner of conveniency," they obtained from him a quit claim of his inheritance rights in the Windham property. A village house was bought of Ebenezer Jennings, and it is supposed that both Thomas and Sarah ended their days in the home. On 26 Sept 1729, Joseph Martin of Lebanon bought the grist mill, saw mill on Mill Falls, and 40 Acres of Land, being the Hartshorn homstead. This sale must have amply provided for their needs.

No death or stone records have been found. In the settlement above, Ebenezer is called the "only living son" and there is mention of the daughter Sarah Manley of Lebanon Crank. Had there been other daughters known to be living, they would probably have been mentioned also; perhaps there were no others living.
