Little is known of Jonathan. He appears in the will of Richard Rooten which reads in part: Estate of Richard Rooten of Lynn..."Alsoe I wll that if Jonathan Harshorne...continue with my wife and Edmond Rooten (a kinsman) ...term of years I doe gran him ffive..." June 12, 1663

No relationship is shown between Richard Rooten or wife and Thomas Hartshorn or Susannah. It would have been natural to place Jonathan with relatives, if any, in preference to apprenticing him outside the family, for he was rather younger than is customary for apprentices at the date of his mother's death. Judging from the land records, this man would have been considered wealthy. He was a weaver and had other apprentices, some of whom filled out their time with the widow and nephew Edmond after his death. Records show no other heirs than those named in the will. Perhaps it was considered a desirable situation for Jonathan.
