Obituary of Monroe Litz Graybeal

Monroe L. Graybeal, killed in the Maxwell quarry last Thursday, was a nephew of D.B. Spracher of West Graham, and had a number of other relatives in Bluefield. He was a cousin of Mrs. David Bradshaw, Mrs. Charles Stinson, Mrs. S.N. Worley, Mrs. C.M. Petty and the Greever family of Bluefield, Va.

A Bluefield businessman received a letter from Mr. Graybeal on the day he met his death.

The tragedy caused much genuine sorrow throughout the community. A sister of Mr. Graybeal, Mrs. Evelyn Graybeal, who died several years ago, taught in the Graham high school.

The Graybeals own a beautiful home at Maxwell, built two years ago. Mr. Graybeal said he was building it so "Roe" could live with them.

The young man's full name was Monroe Litz Graybeal. He was known as "Roe." He was a graduate of Roanoke college and a young man of noble character. His mother, formerly Miss Jennie Spracher, is buried in Maple Hill cemetery, West Graham. She died when Monroe was quite young.

The Graybeals prospered in the lime and milling business at Maxwell.

The Graybeals formerly lived in Bluefield, Va. Monroe Graybeal taught chemistry in the Tazewell high school.

Funeral rites for Monroe L. Graybeal, son-in-law of the Rev. Jennings W. Hobson of Bluefield, who was killed in a quarry blast at the Bluestone Lime company's kiln in Maxwell, Va., Thursday evening, will be conducted from Tazewell Lutheran church this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Burial will be in Tazewell cemetery.

The blast also took the life of Elbert Brewster, 30-year-old resident of Maxwell. Funeral for Brewster will be held at Pleasant Hill church in Maxwell.

Graybeal's father, Fields Graybeal, is a patient at Richlands hospital suffering a broken pelvis and fractured skull although his condition is not thought to be critical.

Graybeal is survived by his parents and his wife, Mrs. Julia Hobson Graybeal of bluefield and one child. One sister preceded him to the grave.

Monroe Graybeal, a graduate of Roanoke college, was a teacher of chemistry at Tazewell high school.

The explosion was a dynamite blast.
