Obituary of William and Monroe Graybeal

Joint Services for William and Monroe Graybeal,
Father and Son, Injured Fatally in Explosion

Joint funeral services for Monroe Litz Graybeal, 28, son-in-law of the Rev. Jennings W. Hobson of this city, and his father, William Fields Graybeal, 70, were conducted at Tazewell Lutheran church yesterday afternoon. The Rev. John Futch, pastor, and the rev. C.F. Lundy, of Tazewell, officiated. Burial was in Maplewood cemetery at Tazewell.

Monroe Litz Graybeal was killed in a dynamite blast, and his father died in the Richlands hospital yesterday morning from injuries sustained in the same accident. The premature blast also took the life of Elbert Brewster, 30-year-old resident of Maxwell. The funeral for Brewster was held at Pleasant Hill church, Maxwell.

The tragedy resulting in the deaths of the three men occurred Thursday evening at Maxwell at the quarry of the Bluegrass Lime company, headed by the elder Graybeal. Mr. Graybeal was also owner of a flower mill at Maxwell and was an extensive farmer and landowner.

Mrs. Graybeal, the wife and mother, is under treatment at the Richlands hospital, because of the severe shock of her bereavements. Before marriage, Mrs. Graybeal was Miss Kate Spracher [editor's note: Monroe's mother was Jennie Spracher who died when he was young. William's wife a the time of his death was the former Vivian Dailey]. The young Mr. Graybeal is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Julia Hobson, of Bluefield and a small child, Monroe Litz Graybeal, Jr.

The older Mr. Graybeal was three times married. His is survived by a son by a former marriage, David S. Graybeal, of Pulaski, Va. one brother, Arthur Graybeal, Maxwell, and four sisters, Mrs. W.P. Armentrout and Mrs. Charles P. Harman of Maxwell; Mrs. H.R. Leonard of Virginia Beach, and Mrs. W.I. Payne of Roanoke. A daughter, Miss Evelyn Graybeal died about three years ago in Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.

Mr. Graybeal was a veteran of the Spanish American war. He was a native of Tazewell county and long prominent in business circles. He spent some years in the west, where he was engaged in several enterprises. He returned to this section about 32 years ago.

Three grandchildren, Nancy and David Graybeal, children of D.S. Graybeal, and Monroe Litz Graybeal Jr., child of the late Monroe L. Graybeal survive.
