William RING

(1568 - Abt 1629)

William and Mary Durrant Ring had begun the voyage to American in 1620 on the Speedwell which was the smaller sister ship of the Mayflower. A day after the Mayflower and Speedwell had left port, the smaller ship began to take on water and both ships returned to England.

After an inspection the pilgrims decided that the smaller ship was too damaged to make the voyage. There was enough room on the Mayflower for only a handful of the Speedwell's passengers, so the rest had to stay behind. William and Mary were among those who remained. Another of those who stayed behind was Robert Cushman, one of the Separatist leaders, who wrote of the short, but frightful voyage aboard the Speedwell, "Poore William Ring and my selfe doe strive who shall be meate first for the fishes."

The Ring family returned to their home in Leyden, Holland where William died sometime before 1627. Despite these setbacks, Mary Ring and her three children, Elizabeth, Susanna, and Andrew, sailed to Plymouth before 1627, being among the last of the Leyden Separatists to move. Mary died in Plymouth a few years after her arrival, and her will was proved October 28, 1633.
