Obituary of Thursa Jane Cornett Hale

Mrs. Thursa Cornett Hale, 79, passed away suddenly at her home in Spring Valley on Friday morning, February 14, 1941, about eleven o'clock. Mrs. Hale, who was the widow of the late Charles Reece Hale, had been in declining health for the past several years. Her husband died about nine years ago.

The deceased woman was a daughter of the late Monroe Cornett and wife, Mrs. Jane McCarter Cornett, of near Elk Creek, and was a member of a very prominent Grayson County family.

Mrs. Hale was the grandmother of Mrs. R. E. Jones II, Galax.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. R. W. Cannaday, Spring Valley; one son, Herman C. Hale, Huntington, W. Va.; six sisters, Mrs. S. H. Mitchell and Miss Lillian Cornett, Elk Creek; Mrs. Mollie Copenhaver, of Atkins; Mrs. Charles S. Wassum, Marion; Mrs. H. W. Clark, Bassett, and Mrs. W. C. Lawson, Orlando, Fla., and a number of grandchildren. A son, Luther Cleve, died in young manhood after completing a medical course at the Medical College of Virginia, and two other sons, Charles M., who was for several years principal of schools in Americus, Ga., and June P., prominent Spring Valley citizen, died during the past few years. Another daughter, Janie Clyde, died when a young child.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hale were conducted yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, at two o'clock, in Ebenezer Methodist Church, Spring Valley, by the pastor, Rev. R. G. Farmer; Rev. T. C. Vaughan, veteran Methodist minister and brother-in-law of the deceased, and Rev. E. D. Worley, of Wytheville, district superintendent of the Wytheville District of the Methodist Church.

The service was begun with a hymn, "Nearer My God to Thee", by the choir, after which the Rev. Mr. Farmer read a scripture selection. "How Firm a Foundation" was then sung, and the Rev. Mr. Farmer offered a prayer.

A quartet, comprised of Mrs. Z. G. Phipps, Mrs. Clarence I. Carlan, Eugene Carico and M. Luther Myers, Galax, sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere."

The Rev. Mr. Vaughan then read an obituary sketch of the life of the deceased, and gave a very appropriate talk.

The Rev. Mr. Worley gave a very appropriate and comforting talk, after which the choir sang "Abide With Me." The Rev. Mr. Farmer then read two poems, "Crossing the Bar" and "Down to the Sea in Ships", and also made appropriate remarks.

The remains were interred in the Hale family plot in Ebenezer Cemetery.
