William Bryan McCarter, 9, Killed in Accident Near Galax
Services Here Today Burial at Jerusalem
A most tragic accident occurred shortly after noon Saturday, March 10 on Route 58 near the Baywood road junction when William Bryan McCarter nine-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill McCarter, Poplar Street was fatally injured when thrown from a jeep driven by his grandfather, City Manager Walter G. Andrews. According to available information, the jeep and a truck driven by Straley Brewer, Independence Purina feed dealer, sideswiped each other in the sharp curve just west of the Baywood road.
The boy, it was understood, was sitting in the rear seat of the jeep and was thrown from the vehicle onto the pavement on the left side of the jeep which was traveling westward. The feed truck was traveling toward Galax. The child's head struck the road surface and death was instantaneous it was reported.
State Trooper S. H. Dettor, Jr. Independence, investigated the mishap. No charges were preferred.
Mr. Andrews and his young grandson had started to Mr. Andrews' farm at Fox. No one except the child was injured, and no appreciable damage was done to either of the vehicles involved.
The deceased child is survived in addition to his parents, by a sister, Anna Belle McCarter; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter G. Andrews, also of Poplar Street,and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. S. H. Kegley, West Stuart Drive, Galax.
Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church today (Monday) at 11 a.m.
The services were opened with the hymn "Abide With Me" by the choir, and Dr. W. M. Bunts, of Max Meadows, a former pastor of the church, read Scripture and offered a prayer. A solo "Safe In the Arms of Jesus" was then sung by C. L. Pickering.
The Rev. Prince A. Eades, pastor of the church, delivered the funeral eulogy. Mrs. N. G. Dixon was organist for the rites.
Interment was in the Jerusalem Methodist Church cemetery at Fallville near Spring Valley where the committal rites were conducted by the Rev. Prince Eades.
The body was removed from Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home to the Andrews residence Sunday afternoon.
Pallbearers were O. L. Parsons, Joe Crockett, Gene Vaughan, Ben Cox and Buford Lindamood.
