Willie "Bill" McCarter, 81, of Galax, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, in the University of Virginia Medical Center.
He was born in Grayson County, on Dec. 25, 1923, to Bryan McCarter and Kate McCarter Kegley.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Annabelle and Michael Forbes of Princeton, W.Va.; his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Dan and Jenny McCarter of Wintergreen; five grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law, Van Buren and Jane McCarter of Galax; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Ann Andrews McCarter; a daughter, Rebecca Ann McCarter; and a son, William Bryan McCarter.
A funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Ballard officiating. Burial will follow in Jerusalem United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home.
He was Past Master of the Galax Masonic Lodge; Grand Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the First United Methodist Church and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.
