In the year 1743, the will of Timothy Graylis was entered for probate in Dorchester County, Maryland and names his wife Elizabeth. This is the oldest record of the Grayless family that has been found in North America. Where, when and how the family arrived is still a mystery, but they may have descended from the Grellis family of County Galway in Ireland.
In his will, Timothy Graylis names his two sons -- Owen and Timothy. Timothy (the son) was in Hyde County, North Carolina by 1751. Owen appears in no other records.
Our ancestor Jesse Grayless is the next name to appear in the records of Dorchester County, Maryland. It appears that he was the illegitimate son of Tiimothy's daughter Mary.
During the Revolutionary War, Jesse served in the Caroline County Militia (Caroline was formed from Dorchester County in 1776 and was raised to the rank of Lieutenant and later to Captain. A William Grayless also served as a private in the Caroline County Militia. Both served under the command of Colonel William Whitley. In 1798-1802 a great many families left Caroline County for the area of Ross County Ohio, including Jesse and Trephina's daughter and son-in law -- Nancy and John Carmean.
