Early Thursday morning December 12, our mother Martha Lee Smith passed away and joined her beloved husband, our father, Harold William Smith. Mom was 99 years old and went to bed in the home in Diablo that she and Dad bought 60 years ago and fell asleep and went on her next journey. She left us in the same gracious manner that she lived her whole life.
Mom was born Martha Lee Sales on September 11, 1913 in San Rafael where her father William L. Sales was born, 50 years earlier, August 12, 1863. She was a true California lady and a Bay Area pioneer.
Mom grew up on her parent’s chicken farm in Petaluma where her mother, Martha C. Tharp, was the school teacher and her father was the Mayor Her most favorite times of her youth were riding in the buggy pulled by a Shetland pony, canoeing on the Russian river, and hunting and doing chores at her father’s ranch in Clear Lake.
She was an outstanding student graduating from Petaluma High School with honors and went on to attend and excel at Pomona College where she met her future husband and our father, Harold. They were married in Berkley July 2, 1934 and remained partners, friends, and soulmates for 61 years.
Mom was an avid golfer, a shark at the bridge table, an ardent traveler and, most of all, loved working in her gardens with her favorite flower the salmon and white summer inpatients.
She was a true believer in the power of education through school and travel. She and our father put all of their grandchildren through college and supported the grandchildren in study abroad programs. An eager reader you could still find her in the last days sitting at the kitchen table reading all of the newspapers front to back.
Survived by her nephew Bill Sales, she was ML to many, Mom to her three children Randy, Ginny, and Bruce, and their spouses, and Nana to her 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She will be missed by all of her family and her many, many friends.
Our mom was ever elegant and gracious and possessed a sharp intellect and wonderful wit. She was kind to all, very generous and always had a magnificent sparkly in her brilliant blue eyes.
