Mrs. Martha T. Sales, Prominent Pioneer Here, Dies Suddenly

Death came suddenly on Wednesday morning at 6:45 o’clock to Martha Tharp Sales, wife of William L. Sales, former Petaluma mayor, at their home at 619 I street. Her passing comes as a severe shock to the relatives and many friends of the prominent and beloved pioneer who was for many years a leader in church and club circles.

She had arisen to dress to go to a church affair at Guerneville when she suddenly collapsed beside her bed. A doctor was summoned, but she was beyond medical aid. Apparently death was caused from a heart attack. Mrs. Sales celebrated her 80th birthday on Tuesday when she was able to be down town and was greeted by many friends

The body has been removed to the Mount chawed with funeral arrangements pending.

A graduate of the Petaluma high school with the class of 1886, Mrs. Sales had enthusiastically awaited the alumni basket supper to be held at Kenilworth park on Friday night of this week, the affair to be the concluding part of Public Schools Week and the 75th anniversary of the Petaluma high school. Her article written for the 75th edition of the Petaluma High School Enterprise was recently printed in the Argus-Courier editorial column.

Mrs. Sales was born in Iowa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tharp who settled in Sonoma county in 1874. Her father was one of the pioneer contractors of Petaluma and he laid the first cobblestones as paving on Main Street.

A resident of Petaluma since her early life, she attended and graduated from the schools here and for many years followed the teaching profession.

She was elected president of the San Francisco district of the Federated Woman’s Club of California on April 25, 1925. The federation was made up of 14 counties with a membership of 10,000. By virtue of her office she was one of the Vice Presidents of the state organization. She was a past president of the Petaluma Woman’s club in which she took an active part until recently, and was also a lifelong member of the Congregational church. Mrs. Sales had also been active in the social life of the city. She had often contributed articles of interest to the Argus-Courier and was well versed in historical events concerning the community.

Her husband for many years conducted Sales hatchery when the plant was located on the property of the old family home on Third street. The business was later taken over by their son, Paul Sales, and Bourke hatchery at Seventh and F. Streets. The elder Sales was for any years active in civic affairs.

Mrs. Sales was the mother of Paul Sales of Petaluma, Mrs. Harriett B. Ahrens of the Hawaiian Islands, and Mrs. Martha Lee Smith of Berkley, grandmother of Randall, Virginia, and Bruce Smith and William Leland Sales Jr. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Ellis Boscow of Oakland.

Her brother was the late Newton J. Tharp, artist and architect, who designed the Dewey monument in Union Square, San Francisco, and who was the architect of the city and county of San Francisco for a long period. He had written books and plays some of the latter being used by the Bohemian club.

Mr. and Mrs. Sales lived in Lake county for 15 years in operating their pear orchard and returned here in 1945 to again make their home.

Mrs. Sales who possessed a kindly disposition, was always generous to a fault and she was known for her benefactions among those who were less fortunate than herself.
