Jasper Newton ELDER

(27 Dec 1840 - 19 Aug 1923)

After the Civil War, Jasper returned to Harrisville (July 1865) where he remained for 18 months. He spent the next 4 years in Edina, Knox Co. Missouri; 2 years in Locust Hill, Macon Co., Missouri; 1 year in Mercerville, Missouri; and arrived in Salmon, ID in 1875.

His sons Jasper (listed in the 1900 census) and Ethan may be the same person.

Civil War Veteran Called to Rest

Jasper N. Elder, Civil War veteran and pioneer resident of this county, died at the home of his son, A.L. Elder, on the Hockensmith ranch, Sunday morning, August 19, 1923 at the age of 83 years. Two sons, A.L. of Salmon and E.A. of Oklahoma, and one daughter, Mrs. Bert Simer, of Salmon survive, two children, Eva (Mrs. Charles Culver) and Thomas, having died some years ago.

Mr. Elder was born in Butler, Pa., December 28, 1840, and enlisted in the infantry company C, 100 Pennsylvania, and served three years. He was wounded several times and for years suffered from these wounds. He taught for two years in Missouri and there was married, 1868, to Miss Emeline Wire. Mr. and Mrs. Elder and children, Thomas and Eva, came to Lemhi county about forty-five years ago and located as a homestead the ranch now owned by the H. G. Kings in the spring of '78 or the fall of '77. Three children were born here, Arthur, Ethan and Emma now surviving. Mr. Elder also taught school in what is now the Four-Mile district.

The funeral was held in the Presbyterian church Monday at 2 p.m. Rev. Charles A. Hawley preaching and the G.A.R. and American Legion conducting the services at the grave in the old soldiers tract in the Salmon cemetery.
