Elizabeth Bulkeley

(1637 - September 4, 1693)

Elizabeth Bulkeley was the granddaughter of Peter Bulkeley of Concord, Mass. Elizabeth married Reverend Joseph Emerson first, at his death she married John Browne. Elizabeth and John's headstones are at the Old burying Ground in Wakefield, MA and via John Browne's Find a grave memorial "represent some of the oldest expressions of Puritan gravestone art in New England".

Burial

Inscription: Here lyes the body of Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, wife to Capt. John Brown, Esquire, formerly wife to Rev. Joseph Emerson of Mendon, who deceased Sept. 4, 1693, in the 56th year of her age.

Inscription for her 2nd husband John Browne: To the Memory of Capt John Brown, Esqr. Who, after He had Served his generation By the will of God, fell Asleep March the 11th, 1717, Aged near 83 Years. Witty yet wise, grave, good, amonge ye best Was he (the memory of ye just is Blest), Prudent, a pattern, Pillar, and more say, A hearty morner for the Sins of the Day; Bless’d God, When Dying, That he feard not Death,
His pious Soul Took Wings, gave up her Breath Dropt here her Mantle in the Silent Dust Which Waits the Resurrection of the Just.
