Individual Details

Joan Hurst

(March, 1568 - January, 1621)

Joan may be the daughter of William Hurst. She married first Thomas Rogers (not of the Mayflower), then John Tilley. Joan and John sailed from England on the actual Mayflower to the new colony. They were headed to Virginia -is that Jamestown?- but 'after several days of trying to get south to their planned destination, the Colony of Virginia, strong winter seas forced a return to Cape Cod hook.' So they settled in Plymouth by chance. Both Joan and John died in the first winter and were, are buried at Coles Hill Burial Ground. Something to consider: burial had to be in secret, the pilgrims didn't want the natives to see their losses, 'In darkness the fast dwindling laid their dead.'
