Obituary at find a grave memorial: "Providence Patriot (RI), Jan. 11, 1817, p. 3: Deaths. In Smithfield, on Sunday last, after a short and distressing illness, Col. JOHN ANGELL, in the 77th year of his age. Endeared to all by his virtuous qualities, affectionate and kind, he was caressed as a husband, respected as a parent. He knew no enemies; his acquaintances were his friends. During the Revolutionary war, he sustained the rank of Colonel; throughout that eventful period, he bore a large share in the distresses of his country, and often did he expose his breast to achieve that Independence which we now enjoy. Thus, another of the heroes of the Revolution has dropped into the grave--once more are the public called upon to mourn with the relatives, the loss of another of the fathers of their freedom; but their sorrow may be alleviated by the assurance, that he left this world with a glorious prospect beyond the skies, where he has gone to receive a crown of glory, unfading and eternal."Endnotes
