David JOHNSON SMITH

(7 Jan 1849 - 23 Dec 1922)

David Johnson Smith died at his home in Clinch Co. That is the home that I was raised in for several years. (John Michael Smith). It was originally a log home that had been added to over the years by using cut lumber. It was never painted. The only heat in it was a fireplace and the mornings were always cold.

My father, Chester Hamilton Smith, and his brother, Chandler, ran an old water mill to grind corn meal and grits. They rented the mill from a man who bought the mill from Charles W. Curry. The man's name who bought it was Bruce Douglas. Later on, John Miley Smith, Chester's father, tried to buy the property back but was unsuccessful. The mill was located at Mud Creek. Charles Curry owned a field near the mill. The soil was sandy. It was the last field before you get to the mill, going toward the mill from John Miley Smith's old property. Senie Jemima, a daughter of David Johnson, was my Aunt Dink. Her sister, Mary, was married to Bob Jackson.
