Andrew Roscoe Carrigan

(10 Apr 1880 - 16 Oct 1944)

From his obituary published 16 Oct 1944:
"Dying as he wished to go -- after a day in which he had ministered to the needs of a community he had served for twenty-five years -- Dr. Andrew Roscoe Carrigan, 64, prominent Southern Ohio physician and beloved citizen of Manchester, succumbed to a heart attack at 4:15 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, 306 Pike street, Manchester
"For many years Dr. Carrigan had been a sufferer from angina pectoris but it was only in the last three years that the attacks became more recurrent. However, once he had recovered from a seizure, he returned to his office and continued to make calls. This past summer he was a patient for several weeks at Hayswood hospital but after a period of rest again resumed his practice.
"Sunday morning and night Dr. Carrigan had attended services at the First Presbyterian church and during the day had made a number of calls. He suffered the fatal seizure after 2 o'clock yesterday morning and although medical attention was given to him he was unable to overcome its effects and succumbed scarcely two hours later.
"His passing has come as a shocking loss to the people of Manchester who loved him as a citizen just as they had turned to him repeatedly for medical advice and assistance in the long years that he had been their physician. And here in Maysville and throughout this section his death will cause great sorrow, for Dr. Carrigan formerly was one of the leading men of his profession here.
"Dr. Carrigan had exemplified in his life not only the finest traditions of his profession but his was a commanding figure in any circle that he moved. A man of tremendous energy and high spirits, Dr. Carrigan had the geniality of temperament and warm-hearted kindliness that made people feel better merely by being in his presence. He had a deep, abiding interest in the welfare and well being of every one about him and this very lovable trait made of him a man of fine sympathy and understanding.
" . . . He was educated in the public schools of Aberdeen and was prepared for his life's work at the College of Medicine, University of Louisville, where he was graduated in August 1903. After doing post-graduate work at the Cincinnati College of Medicine, he began his practice in Mason county in October of 1903 and from then until 1917 had his offices in Sardis.
"In 1917 Dr. Carrigan and his family moved to Manchester, where he built up an extensive practice in succeeding years, one that became so onerous that it prompted his decision to come to Maysville in 1929. Dr. Carrigan then suffered from angina and he thought that with the medical profession so well represented here the demands upon him would be less pressing. However, he made Maysville his home but three years and then returned to Manchester to serve out his days among the people there.
"Dr. Carrigan was a member of the First Presbyterian church at Manchester and most active in his participation. Also he was a member of the Masonic lodge, of the American Medical Association and of the Adams County medical society, a group in which he was also a past officer."
