Individual Details

George William James

(24 Dec 1864 - 5 Aug 1938)

His obituary says he was a resident of Danville for over 50 years and formerly in business in Danville. He was "a member of the Knights of Pythias for 50 years. He was employed at Hegeler Zinc Company until his retirement six years ago."

A newspaper clipping titled "Helped to open mine in Mexico rocked by blast" says George W. James was one of 50 men recruited from Illinois, Iowa and other Midwestern states to open the Rosita Coal Mine Company's Number 6 mine near Neuvo Rosita, Coachuila, Mexico. The men left St. Louis April 12, 1888 but returned sometime in June or July after their pay was cut. When he returned to Danville, he worked in various mines. He conducted a saloon
in Danville from 1894 until saloons were voted out nearly 20 years ago (1917), after
which he returned to the mines. His last mining was in the Hegler mine.
