Jacob Staples Sr.

(10 Nov 1669 - 29 May 1724)

From Staples, by Wealtha Staples: "Timothy Winter gave a portion of his house lot to Abigail on which Jacob built a house. The Winter home lot was just east of Mendon Village."
Notes from the STAPLES HISTORY by Joseph Peirce: "The fact is deplorable that my search has failed to ascertain further stories of Jacob Staples, son of Abraham and Mary (Randall) Staples. I know only the barest outline of his life. He was the fourth son of Abraham and Mary (Randall) Staples [Note: Jacob was fourth child, third son], born in Mendon, November 10, 1669. He was six years old when the family had to remove to Braintree at the beginning of the King Philip War, during which time Mendon was abandoned and the houses burned about 1675/1676. They returned before 1678. March 28, 1690 he married Abigail, the daughter of Timothy Winter of Mendon who gave the young couple a six and one half acre lot with its rights in the division of land. There was one daughter Hannah, born January 26, 1692/1693 and another who died in infancy. Jacob's wife Abigail died in 1694/1695 and about 1696 he removed to Taunton with his father when he bought land of Peter Caswell January 6, 1697. He had married Mary, widow of Remember Briggs September 15, 1696. I don't know her maiden name but she may have belonged to Weymouth where her children named Briggs were born between 1686 and 1693. The Will of Remember Briggs was made in Taunton April 22, 1696. He was a carpenter. One of the overseers of the Will was John Staple of Taunton, a cousin of Jacob and about his age, son of Joseph. Jacob's father Abraham went back to Mendon and died there and Jacob sold his land in Mendon about 1710. His children by his second wife were Jacob Jr., Noah, Abigail who married Isaac Hoar, and Mary who married Jonathan Harvey.
His Will was made February 24, 1723/1724 and probated May 29, 1724. His daughter Hannah married Samuel Briggs his stepson. Jacob Staples must have been prosperous as his inventory foots up to 497 pounds, a large sum for that time, 20 acres in the homestead and much in farm land, including some in Middleboro. He was of the Military Company in Taunton in 1710 and 1711. His autograph is reproduced in "Emery History of Taunton", page 765 as of, 1711, so that he had more education than was common then.
He was a farmer. He moved to East Taunton, an area called Cotley, near his brother Joseph about 1694/1695. In 1698, he bought 12 acres in East Taunton next to deceased Remember Brigg's property, and in 1699 he bought 20 acres from John Richmond, Sr. and built his homestead. In 1707 he bought 19 acres from John Richmond, Sr. which eventually became the family homestead.
In the towns of Taunton and Richmondtown there exists streets named Staples even today.
NOTE: A roster of the first military company of Taunton 1700, among the names listed is that of Jacob Staples.

From the New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial: A Record of the Achievements of Her People in the Making of Commonwealths and the Founding of a Nation, Volume 1, by William Richard Cutter, Lewis Historical Publishing Company, 1915:
"(III) Jacob, third son of Abraham and Mary (Randall) Staples, was born November 16, 1669, in Mendon, and was living there as late as 1692. Perhaps he lived in some part of Mendon now another town, as only two of his children appear in Mendon records. He died in 1724. He married (first) March 28, 1690, Abigail, daughter of Timothy and Hester Winter, of Mendon, born 1673, an^ built a house on the lot given her by her father. She died before 1696, and he married (second) September 15, 1696, Mary, widow of Remember Briggs. Children of first wife, recorded in Mendon: Abigail, born September 3, 1691; Hannah, September 26, 1692. There is reason to believe that Nathan Staples, of Smithfield, Rhode Island, was a son of Jacob."
