Charles S. ROSS

From the Cyclopedia of Biographies, Chautauqua County, New York (Page 646 Article on Dr. Artemus Ross, son of George, son of Charles S., son of Samuel, "....His son, Charles Ross (grandfather) [of Artemus], settled first in Chenango county but afterwards came to this county where he purchased one hundred and eighty acres of land about four miles north of the site of the village of Clymer. He was a democrat, married Amy Woodburn, a cousin to Horace Greeley's mother, and had nine sons and four daughters, all of whom lived to maturity....."
The 1790 Census has Charles Ross in Stephen Town, Albany County, New York and neighbors include George Woodburn and several other Ross families.
The 1820 Census shows the Ross family in German, Chenango County, New York.
The "Chautauqua County Genealogical Society" shows that Charles Ross purchased lot #56 in Clymer, Chautauqua County, New York.
Also the 1830 Census shows Charles Ross in Clymer, Chautauqua County, New York, included on the same page are Walter Freeman, Darius Freeman, Silas Freeman and Leonard Smith. Nearby is Peter Jaquins, Charles' son-in-law.
The 1840 Census shows Charles Ross in Sherman, Chautququa County, New York
Nelson's Biographical Dictionary (1896) indicated he and Amy were from Chenango County, New York.

"ROSS CEMETERY
(aka Hunink Farm Cemetery)
CLYMER, NY Located on a knoll in a pasture on the Russell Hunink farm (in early days the Ross farm), near Upper Road on Clymer Hill in northwestern part of Clymer. In 1976, Marguerite Neckers VanderSchaaff, Town Historian of Clymer at the time, reported the following inscriptions: Charles S. Ross, b. June 30, 1768, d. 1850 at 81 years.
Mrs. Charles S. Ross, d. Dec. 6, 1834 at 59 years.
Note: She is listed in the Ross Family Bible as Amy Woodburn Ross, b. Apr 3, 1775, d. Dec 6, 1834 at 59 years.
Note: Father of Charles Ross was Samuel Ross of Rutland, VT and was a soldier of the Revolutionary War.
C.B. (Claudia [Claudius]) Ross, d. Oct 15, 1909, about 69 years old, having been born in 1840. Note: This stone has disappeared since 1970 when Mrs. Paul Bennett of Sherman, NY last saw it. I suspect that in the process of plowing the ground nearby that it was plowed under.
