Individual Details
Abigail ROSS
(1805 - 19 May 1877)
In the 1850 Census of Coral, McHenry County, Illinois she is widowed and living with seven children; Walter Ross, David W., Charles S. Amy, Josephine, and William Rodolphus. Also in the household is Amelia who may be a niece or other relative. Amelia's birth year is taken from the 1850 Census which shows she was born two years after Walter died. There is no other information on her to validate a birth date and she cannot be found in later census reports.
In the 1860 Census she is living with the family of her son Charles Silas in Hamilton, Lee County, Illinois along with another son William Rodolphus.
In the 1870 Census she is living with the family of her son Charles Silas in Walnut, Bureau County, Illinois.
In the 1877 Bureau County Illinois Voters & Tax-Payers Directory, Page 296, the following: "FREEMAN ABIGAIL Mrs. widow of Walter; Bapt; N.Y."
The Bureau County Genealogical Society maintains a caretaker file for Walnut Cemetery which has a record number of CL. No. 2598-148. This records Abigail's birth as 1805 and death date as 19 May 1877.
It's been a research challenge for many years for Abigail's descendants to find her parents. Although there are no confirming vital records or historical documents there are some very strong indications documented through non-official papers. The significant ones are quoted within:
Martha Rood, a descendant/researcher, writes in 2012; ""I do not have positive "paper" documentation that Abigail is a daughter of Charles & Amy (Woodburn) Ross. My information comes from my late great aunt who corresponded with the late historian in Sherman, NY who was also a Ross descendant. My aunt's notes claimed a Ross bible existed that listed the children. Charles, Benjamin, Amy, Samuel, Abigail, George (my ancestor), David, William, Joseph W, Polly, Artemas and Schuyler."
There is another indication of this family bible at the burial site of Charles and Amy Ross at the Ross Cemetery in Clymer, New York. In reference to Amy Woodburn, it records: 'Note: She is listed in the Ross Family Bible as Amy Woodburn Ross, b. Apr 3, 1775, d. Dec 6, 1834 at 59 years.' The note is written in 1976 by Marguerite Neckers VanderSchaaff, Town Historian of Clymer. The complete recording is contained in the Charles S. Ross narrative.
