Amos SNOW

( - Abt 1813)

Except for his daughter Esther and unless otherwise indicated in the data, much of the data on Amos and Lydia is retrieved from the internet and not confirmed nor resources referenced. The data was posted in late 1990's or early 2000's. In 2007 attempts to contact researchers with the posted email addresses failed.
Amos may have been born in Vermont or New Hampshire.
In 1776 he was in Claremont, Sullivan County, New Hampshire as he is recorded as being shown the Declaration but refused to sign the 1776 New Hampshire Association Test.
In 1779 he was in Cornish, Sullivan County, New Hampshire where the birth of his daughter Esther is recorded.
In the 1790 Census it appears his name is indexed as "Amos Stow" and he is in Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont. If this is in fact, Amos Snow, the census indicates one male older than 15, two males younger than 16, and three females.
In the 1800 Census the family is in Wells, Rutland County, Vermont and it indicates one male 16 through 25 years of age, one male 43 or over, and one female 43 or over.
In the 1820 Census the family is in Weathersfield, Windsor County, Vermont and it indicates one male and one female both 43 or over.
Some unvalidated information and locations for the family are: 1) 1790 in Weathersfield, 2) 1791 Wells, 3) 1791 and later in Granville, Washington County, New York where he was a partner in a sawmill with a man he met in the military, Roger Stevens, and 4) 1797 Wells, 4) 1776 Claremont. Roger Stevens by 1797 moved to Well.
Military: The History of Cheshire and Sullivan Counties, New Hampshire, published Philadelphia: J.W. Lewis & Co., 1886, page a60 records Amos as refusing to sign the declaration (1776 New Hampshire Associated Test) to "defend by Arms, the United Colonies against the Hostile attempts of the British Fleets and Armies." For whatever the reason in not signing, it is evident that he served as a patriot in the Revolutionary War. He is listed in the U. S. Revolutionary War Rolls 1775-1783 of the National Archives (Microfilm M246) and the State of New Hampshire-Rolls of the Soldiers of the Revolutionary War, May 1777 to 1780. In the Pension Lists of 1792-1795, in the section Invalid Pension Claims Submitted to Congress 1792, 1794, 1795, it indicates he enlisted from Claremont, Sullivan County, New Hampshire 28 December 1779, was a Private, discharged in 1782, one-third pension, deaf, disabled while in service, and served in Colonel Cilley's Regiment for New Hampshire.
