John ATKINS

(14 Oct 1717 - 8 Sep 1787)

The gravestones of both John and his wife Elizabeth show the surname spelling as Atkins.
From Atkins Chronicles: "John Adkins of Claremont, New Hampshire, son of the second Josiah and Mary (Wheeler) Adkins, was born in Middletown, Connecticut, 14 October 1717. He was baptized or admitted to Communion 8/20/1717 (Old Style) and renewed the Covenant 7/14/1744. He died in Claremont, New Hampshire 8 August 1787 [Note: his gravestone clearly indicates death as 8 September 1787] in his 69th year..
He married 14 December 1742 in Middletown, Elizabeth Jerome of Wallingford, Connecticut. She was born about 1724, died in Claremont 5 March 1794 in her 70th year, and was buried in the Old Burying Ground in Claremont.
John Adkins and his wife removed to Waterbury, Connecticut some time before their fifth child was born in 1754. There are no records of the births of their first four children. They lived in Waterbury until 1772-3, when they removed to Claremont, New Hampshire, JOHN having bought land along the Sugar River, where he set up mills.
John Adkins signed the New Hampshire Declaration of Independence (Association Test) on 30 May 1776. He also gave patriotic service as a Selectman in 1779. He was fifty-five or six years of age when he removed to the frontier town of Claremont; references to him in the town records picture a vigorous and respected older citizen.
Although his name appears in the Chesire County Probate Index 1769-1800, his will has not been found; however, deeds show that his son David was executor for his estate.
The 1790 Census for Claremont reported Elizabeth Adkins' household as consisting of two free white females."
